Marie Curie was a famous scientist. She was the youngest of five children in a family of teachers. Both her parents struggled under political repression and financial hardship, which shaped Marie’s resilience and determination to become a famous scientist. At age ten, she lost her mother to tuberculosis and her sister Zofia to typhus, experiences that left a profound impact on her personal beliefs and instilled independence and drive. She grew up in a country under Russian law that restricted educational opportunities for women. She showed remarkable intelligence and curiosity from a young age. A love for learning drove her. This statement refers to Marie Curie (born Maria Skłodowska), who secretly attended the illegal Flying University (Uniwersytet Latający) in Warsaw, Poland. She is known for her discovery of radioactivity and for the discovery of two new chemical elements. Marie Curie was the first scientist to win Nobel Prizes in different sciences and was also a pioneer in physics and chemistry. She was born on November 7, 1867, in Warsaw, Poland. Her full name was Marie Sklodowska Curie. Marie Curie, despite these hardships, excelled academically, showing a prodigious memory and earning a gold medal at age 16 for her secondary education. To support her elder sister Bronisława’s medical studies in Paris, Marie worked as a governess and tutor, while secretly attending the Flying University, a clandestine institution for women in Poland, to continue her education in science and mathematics.
Marie Curie moved to France in 1891 to study at the Sorbonne because women were not allowed to attend universities in Poland at the time. In Paris, she adopted the French version of her name (Marie instead of Maria). She became the first woman to teach at the Sorbonne and the first woman to earn a degree in physics from the university. She earned her degree in physics in 1893 and a second degree in 1894, beginning her scientific career with research on the magnetic properties of steel. Curie's groundbreaking research focused on the mysterious rays discovered by Wilhelm Röntgen and Henri Becquerel. Her family was poor, but educated. Her parents were teachers. She had loved maths and science since her childhood. She worked hard day and night, becoming one of the best students.
She undertook intense study while living in modest conditions, often surviving on bread, butter, and tea. She married Pierre Curie in 1895 and formed a scientific partnership that would change the course of science. Pierre Curie, a physicist who shared her passion for science. She had two daughters named Irène and Eve, who also worked hard like their parents. Her daughter Irène also joined her in these efforts, helping establish the Institute’s medical and research programs. Marie and Pierre collaborated on scientific research. They became a strong scientific team. They both discovered polonium and radium, for which she won two Nobel Prizes in two different fields. She won one in physics in 1903 and another in chemistry in 1911. Polonium was named after Poland. They isolated radium salts from tons of uranium ore, demonstrating its intense radioactivity. She was the first woman professor at the Sorbonne University. In 1911, she became the sole recipient of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for her discovery of radium and polonium, making her the first person to win Nobel Prizes in two different scientific fields.
She worked to lay the foundation for advances in medical treatment and nuclear physics. She faced many challenges as a woman in science. Marie Curie maintained her Polish identity throughout her life, teaching her daughters the language and visiting Poland regularly. After Pierre’s tragic death in 1906, Marie continued her research and applied radioactivity to medicine, founding the Curie Institute in Paris (1920) and Warsaw (1932), which remain leading centers for medical research. During World War I, she assisted soldiers by developing X-ray technology and also traveled through battle areas to aid doctors in treating the injured. She helped thousands of people in World War I. Marie Curie undertook international lectures and collaborations, including in the United States, where she received one gram of radium from American women to advance her research. She remained dedicated to scientific advancement, studying radioactive isotopes and promoting their medical applications. Marie Curie is actually the UK's leading end-of-life charity, providing holistic care to patients with any terminal illness, not just cancer. Curie worked with elements that were very harmful and posed a danger, yet she worked without any protection. For so many years, she worked with dangerous elements, which made her sick later in her life. She died on July 4, 1934, at the Sancellemoz Sanatorium in Passy, France, at the age of 66
